GTA 5 FAQ

We rounded up the questions players ask most often before buying the game or launching it for the first time, and answered them quickly and clearly.

Questions and answers

Can I download GTA 5 for free legally?

Completely free — only during official giveaways (for example, Epic Games Store has given the game away for free) or through a subscription that includes it. Otherwise, there's only one legal route: buying it on the Rockstar Store, Steam, Epic, PlayStation Store, or Microsoft Store. Pirated builds are risky: they often come bundled with miners and trojans, and GTA Online doesn't work with them anyway.

How much storage does GTA 5 take up on PC?

A fully updated install takes up roughly 95–110 GB. For a smooth installation, it's best to have 120–130 GB of free space, since the installer itself needs extra room for temporary files.

Will GTA 5 run on a weak PC?

Yes. The game runs even on setups as modest as a second-generation Core i5 with a GTX 660 and 4 GB of RAM, though you'll need to lower anti-aliasing, shadows, and reflections. Running it from an SSD makes a noticeable difference in smoothness thanks to faster texture streaming.

Do cheats work in GTA Online?

No. Cheat codes only work in single-player. In Online, any mods or third-party tools risk a ban — sometimes permanent, along with any purchases tied to the account.

Do achievements get disabled when using cheats?

Yes, achievements and trophies stop tracking while a cheat is active. Simply restart the game without entering any codes, and achievement progress will resume normally.

How do I install mods without breaking the game?

Use OpenIV and a mods folder to keep the game's original archives untouched. Always back up first, install mods one at a time, and check that the game launches after each one. Disable mods before playing GTA Online.

Which is better: Steam, Epic, or the Rockstar Store?

Steam offers the most convenient features (cloud saves, overlay, standard refunds), Epic occasionally offers better discounts and coupons, and the Rockstar Store is a direct purchase from the publisher. Either way, the game launches through the Rockstar Games Launcher.

Is an internet connection required for single-player?

You need internet for initial activation and updates. After that, Story Mode runs fine in the launcher's offline mode, while GTA Online requires a constant connection.

What you should know before you start

Grand Theft Auto V launched in September 2013 and remains one of the best-selling games of all time. It has two halves: a story campaign following three protagonists — Michael, Franklin, and Trevor — and a constantly evolving online mode, GTA Online, that has received new updates for more than a decade.

How the editions differ

  • PC, PS5, and Xbox Series versions support 4K resolution and higher frame rates.
  • Story content is identical across every edition — only the visuals change.
  • Mods only work on PC, and only in single-player.
  • GTA Online progress carries over within the same platform family.

Where to go next

If you're still deciding where to buy the game, start with the download page, double check your rig against the system requirements, then browse the guides and cheats sections — that's where you'll find the material most players need in their first hours with the game.
