GTA 5 System Requirements

Released back in 2013, GTA 5 remains one of the most accessible AAA titles in terms of hardware demands. Below are three tiers of specs, real FPS numbers, and the settings that keep weaker PCs running smoothly.

Best settings for a low-end PC

Order matters here — the first two tweaks deliver most of the performance gain.

  • MSAA — turn it off, keep FXAA on: up to a 25% FPS gain.
  • Reflection Quality — set to "Normal," turn off Reflection MSAA.
  • Soft Shadows — use "Softer" instead of "Softest."
  • Advanced Graphics settings — turn them all off.
  • Resolution Scale — keep at 1.0, no supersampling.
  • Move the game to an SSD: eliminates texture pop-in during fast driving.

An SSD matters more than you'd think

On a hard drive the game loads slower and pops in textures mid-drive. Moving to an SSD is often more noticeable than a one-tier GPU upgrade.

Graphics mods change the requirements

The photorealistic presets from our mods section increase the load by 1.5–2x. Plan for extra performance headroom.

Will GTA 5 run on your computer

GTA 5 remains one of the least demanding AAA titles around: the RAGE engine scales well and runs even on recent integrated graphics. The real bottleneck usually isn't the GPU — it's RAM and storage type. 4 GB of RAM paired with a hard drive means constant texture pop-in while driving fast through the city.

What matters most for FPS

  • MSAA anti-aliasing is the single most expensive setting — disabling it can add up to a 25% FPS boost.
  • Reflection quality puts the heaviest load on the GPU while driving through the city.
  • Draw distance mostly stresses the CPU, not the GPU.
  • An SSD eliminates object pop-in and cuts GTA Online session load times roughly in half.

Laptops and integrated graphics

Laptops with a discrete GTX 1050 or better consistently hit 50–60 FPS at 1080p on Medium settings. Integrated Radeon 780M and Intel Arc chips handle 1080p at Low settings around 40–50 FPS. Don't forget to switch your power plan to maximum performance — otherwise the GPU runs at half its potential.

Frequently asked performance questions

How much RAM do you need?

4 GB is the bare minimum, 8 GB is comfortable, and if you're running mods with a browser open in the background, 16 GB is better.

Is an SSD required?

Not required, but it's exactly what eliminates texture pop-in and speeds up GTA Online session load times.

How do you cap the frame rate?

Turn on V-Sync in the game's settings, or set a frame rate limit in your NVIDIA or AMD driver control panel.

Why does FPS drop downtown?

Dense buildings and traffic put extra load on the CPU. Lowering population density and draw distance helps more than lowering texture quality.
